This can make it more difficult to do things like walking, climbing stairs or taking part in hobbies and sports.\n\nDoctors and physiotherapists think that special exercises to strengthen the muscles in the legs could help children and young people with cerebral palsy stay more active as they grow older.\n\nWe are asking lots of young people with cerebral palsy, from across the country, to take part in this study.\n\nHalf the young people will do the new ROBUST exercises… and half will do the usual physio exercises.\n\nThe group doing the ROBUST exercise programme will see a physio 6 times in 4 months to go through the exercises.\n\nYou will do the exercises at home, 3 times a week, with help if you need it.\n\nThe group doing the usual exercise programme will see a physiotherapist once to go through the exercises and agree which activities to do.\n\nTo make the study fair, neither you nor the doctors and physiotherapists can choose which treatment you have.\n\nIt is decided by a computer using a process called randomisation.\n\nWe want to find out which exercise programme works best.\n\nWe also want to find out if the ROBUST exercises give you more muscle soreness than usual exercises.\n\nIf you join the ROBUST Study, a physiotherapist will carry out some simple tests to look at the strength of the muscles in your legs and how fast you can walk.\n\nWe will ask some questions about your walking, how well you can do activities, how you feel and if you’ve missed any school.\n\nAfter 6 months you will come back to the hospital and a physiotherapist will carry out the same simple tests.\n\nWe will also send you the same set of questions by email or by post, at 6 months and at 12 months.\n\nYou don’t have to take part in the study.\n\nIf you do take part you can leave at any time.\n\nYou will still receive the usual physio treatment.\n\nBy taking part you will help us find out which exercises are best for young people with cerebral palsy.\n\nThe doctors, physiotherapists and research team are happy to answer any questions you have about joining the ROBUST study.",{"sectionLabel":108},"DRIFT Participant Information Animation",{"type":110,"settings":111,"title":112,"text":113,"image":114,"sectionSettings":116},"text_and_image",{"imgWidth":91,"imgPosition":92},"## Background","Cerebral palsy (CP) is caused when babies around the time of their birth suffer brain injury from lack of oxygen in the brain. As they grow, children with CP develop stiff and weak muscles. They often have difficulty walking and moving and that makes it difficult for them to join in different activities.\n\nPhysiotherapy becomes a big part of their lives as it tries to train their muscles and help them participate in activities. When they reach their adolescent years and their body grows bigger the weakness of muscles in the legs becomes more of a problem. It is possible that a programme of exercises to strengthen their leg muscles could help them remain more active. We are not certain that young people with CP truly benefit from the time and effort they dedicate to doing these exercises.
